Bassin du fleuve Gambie : hausse des niveaux d’eau à Kédougou et Gouloumbou
The Tambacounda Water Resources Brigade published its daily hydrological bulletin on the evolution of the Gambia River and its tributaries on August 21, 2025. The readings show contrasting variations depending on the station, with notable increases in Kédougou, Gouloumbou, and Niokolo Koba, but also significant decreases in Mako, Afia Pont, and Sinthiou Malème.
At the Diaguiri station, the water level fell by 16 cm in 24 hours to 4.05 m. The drop is even more marked at Afia Pont, where the level fell from 2.61 m to 2.06 m, a decrease of 55 cm.
In Sinthiou Malème, the trend is also downward with a decline of 27 cm, while the Niokolo Koba station recorded an increase of 15 cm, reaching 6.55 m.
On the main stem of the Gambia River, the Kédougou station shows a spectacular rise of 78 cm in one day, now reaching 5.66 m, compared to 4.88 m the day before. At the same time last year, the level was only 3.27 m.
Although this trend remains below the alert level set at 7 m, the authorities are calling for vigilance.
The Simenti station recorded a near-stable level, with a level of 7.99 m, only 1 cm lower than the previous day. At Mako, however, the river receded by 20 cm to reach 4.14 m, remaining well below the alert level of 6 m.
The Gouloumbou station noted a rise of 11 cm, with a current level of 7.50 m, compared to 7.39 m the day before. Here too, the alert level is much higher (12 m), but the development is being closely monitored.
These daily observations, carried out at 8 a.m. at the various stations, allow for close monitoring of the river's fluctuations. They play a central role in the early warning system against flooding and contribute to strengthening the resilience of riverside populations in the face of climatic hazards.
