The High Commissioner of the Senegal River Development Organization (OMVS), Mohamed Abdel Vetah, announced the implementation of water releases at the Manantali dam starting this weekend. This decision follows exceptionally high rainfall this year, which has led to a sharp rise in water levels in the river basin.
According to the OMVS, the current hydrographic situation is resulting in significant flows, with alert levels already reached at times in several riverside locations, notably in Bakel, Matam and Podor. A monitoring and crisis unit, bringing together the member states as well as the organization's companies, has been closely monitoring the situation since the beginning of the rainy season.
"The normal management level of the Manantali dam is set at 207.53 meters (IGN). The water releases are intended to secure the structure by evacuating excess volumes. But this sluggish flooding will inevitably lead to a rise in the water level in certain areas along the Senegal River," explained Mohamed Abdel Vetah.
Faced with this risk, OMVS calls on the relevant national authorities to inform and raise awareness among populations living in areas likely to be affected by possible flooding. The organization calls for vigilance and action to prevent any danger associated with this rising water level.
The concerted management of the Senegal River remains at the heart of the OMVS's mission, which ensures regular monitoring of the flood each year in order to protect populations and guarantee the safe operation of its strategic hydraulic structures.
