A case of infanticide has shaken the village of Mbélole, in the Wourou Sidy district. A 14-year-old girl and her cousin, a shepherd, were brought before the Matam High Court on Monday.
The facts
AA Ba, a shepherd in his twenties, was in a romantic relationship with his cousin AA Barry. This relationship resulted in a pregnancy that the teenager managed to conceal from her family for several months.
On November 4th, the young woman gave birth alone in the toilet to a newborn girl. She cut the umbilical cord with her hands, then threw the baby into the septic tank.
Two days later, the infant's body began to decompose. The foul odor emanating from the septic tank alerted the household. The villagers immediately notified the head nurse at the Thialy health post. After assessing the situation, he contacted the commander of the Kanel territorial brigade. The chief gendarme and his men went to the scene, accompanied by firefighters. The firefighters recovered the newborn's body, which was in an advanced state of decomposition. On the instructions of the public prosecutor, the body was buried on site, according to Seneweb sources.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of young AA Barry. When questioned by investigators, she confessed and identified her cousin, AA Ba, as the father of her child. He was also arrested for abduction of a minor, pedophilia, and rape resulting in pregnancy.
Both were brought before the Matam High Court on Monday. The minor is being prosecuted for infanticide, while her cousin faces charges of abduction of a minor, pedophilia, and rape resulting in pregnancy.
