South African President Cyril Ramaphosa used the national commemoration of Freedom Day last Monday to issue a warning to his compatriots who engage in xenophobic acts.

“We must never allow the legitimate concerns of our communities regarding illegal immigration to breed prejudice against our fellow Africans. We must not allow these concerns to breed xenophobia directed against people from other African countries. We will not allow people to take the law into their own hands,” the South African leader declared.

"These countries opened their borders to our liberation fighters. They shared their bread and their homes."

He reminds his compatriots that African peoples stood with the rainbow nation at the height of Apartheid.

“We did not win freedom alone. We were carried by a wave of solidarity, particularly from African nations. These countries opened their borders to our liberation fighters. They shared their bread and their homes. They spoke for us when we could not speak for ourselves,” Ramaphosa said.

For all these reasons, South Africans should reject hostility towards nationals from other countries on the continent, the leader believes.

"We must remain true to the spirit of Ubuntu."

"It is impossible and must never happen" that South Africans reduce "to dust the African brotherhood that made (their) freedom possible," Ramaphosa warned, calling on everyone to "remain true to the spirit of Ubuntu."

He also urged migrants to respect South African society and laws.

The government, for its part, will continue its fight against illegal immigration, companies employing undocumented workers and corruption within the immigration system, the leader assured, while also inviting his compatriots to let law enforcement do their job instead of taking justice into their own hands.
