Attentat à Jérusalem-Est: cinq morts
Israeli emergency services announced that five people were killed and several wounded on Monday in a shooting attack in East Jerusalem, one of the deadliest in the city since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.
The attack took place at the entrance to the Ramot neighborhood, in the area of the Holy City occupied and annexed by Israel, where the assailants fired on a bus station according to the police.
"Emergency workers and paramedics confirmed the deaths of four people, a man of about 50 years old and three men in their thirties," said Magen David Adom, Israel's equivalent of the Red Cross. A woman was later confirmed dead at the city's Shaare Tzedek hospital, according to a separate statement.
Nine other people were injured, according to Magen David Adom, six of them seriously.
"It was a very difficult scene," said Fadi Dekaidek, a medic, in a Magen David Adom statement. "The wounded were lying on the road and sidewalk near a bus stop, some of them unconscious."
Present at the scene of the attack, "a security officer and a civilian immediately reacted, returned fire and neutralized the attackers," said a police statement, adding that "their deaths have been confirmed."
The Israeli Prime Minister's Office said that Benjamin Netanyahu was holding a meeting "with security officials."
Hamas, which is at war with Israel in the Gaza Strip, welcomed the attack, saying the perpetrators were Palestinians.
"We affirm that this operation is a natural response to the crimes of the occupation and the genocide it is carrying out against our people," the Palestinian Islamist movement said in a statement.
The Israeli army said its forces were "searching for suspects" in the area of the attack and had surrounded Palestinian villages in the Ramallah area of the occupied West Bank.
