The number of measles cases continues to rise in the United States, particularly in the state of South Carolina (southeast) where more than 600 cases have been recorded since last fall.
After more than 2,200 cases recorded and three deaths, including two young children, in 2025, infections continued to surge in 2026.
A major health crisis to which Donald Trump's Minister of Health, the vaccine skeptic Robert Kennedy Jr., is accused of contributing significantly by fueling fears about the vaccine.
In South Carolina, an east coast state, 88 new cases have been reported since Friday, local health authorities said Tuesday, January 20, 2026, bringing the number of infections to 646 since the detection of an outbreak last fall.
The majority of those infected were unvaccinated, authorities stated. Some cases were identified in schools as well as on the campuses of two universities.
The United States and Mexico have been summoned.
Infections have also been reported in eight other US states since the beginning of the year, according to the main US health agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This situation raises fears that the United States may lose its "measles-free country" status, which it acquired in 2000 after eradicating the disease through vaccination.
