Baisse de près de 20% des visas étudiants aux Etats-Unis
The United States issued nearly 20% fewer student visas in August than in August 2024, according to figures from the International Trade Administration released Monday, amid tightening of visa requirements by the Donald Trump administration.
The country issued 313,138 student visas in August, the month when most of its universities start their academic year, a drop of 19.1% compared to the same period last year.
India, which was the largest source of foreign students in the United States last year, has seen a dramatic decline, with 44.5% fewer student visas issued compared to August 2024.
China took its place, although the number of visas issued to its students in August (more than 86,000 for those from mainland China) also fell compared to August last year.
Beijing regularly denounces the treatment it claims certain Chinese students receive when they enter or stay on American soil, in a context of diplomatic tensions between the two powers.
These statistics also show a sharp decline in the number of student visas from Muslim-majority countries, with admissions from Iran, for example, falling by 86%.
They do not reflect all foreigners studying in the United States, but only new visas.
The Trump administration has engaged in a series of battles against universities, targeting renowned institutions that it suspects of allowing anti-Semitic ideas to spread on their campuses, particularly in the context of protests against the war in the Gaza Strip.
In August, the State Department announced it had revoked the visas of more than 6,000 foreign students, including about 4,000 for violating the law.
