Candidature à l’ONU : les précisions du camp de Macky Sall après la décision de l’UA
The camp of former Senegalese President Macky Sall broke its silence on Friday to provide clarifications after the African Union did not adopt the draft decision aimed at supporting his candidacy for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
In a statement, the candidate's communications team clarified that the withdrawal of 20 member states from the silent procedure did not reflect a widespread rejection. Of these countries, 14 expressed a formal objection, while 6 only requested an extension without opposing the text itself.
The campaign team emphasizes that, of the 55 AU member states, 35 have neither objected to nor requested an extension, which it considers a significant base of support. It also highlights developments that have occurred since the publication of the note verbale: Egypt withdrew its request for an extension and Liberia its objection.
At this stage, 13 States maintain their objections and 5 their requests for extension of the silent procedure.
Despite this lack of formal consensus within the continental organization, Macky Sall's camp insists: the candidacy, submitted and registered on March 2, 2026, "remains maintained".
The communications team also thanked the States that supported the proposal and the Bureau of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the AU, while expressing its respect for the countries that exercised their right to object.
Finally, he welcomed the support of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa, expressed at the end of its meeting on March 25 in Nouakchott, as well as that of several institutional and private actors.
