The footbridge collapsed. On Tuesday, the death toll was very high in Santander. In this northern Spanish town, five young people died when a footbridge leading to El Bocal beach collapsed. Another person is still missing, according to the national sea rescue service.
“Search teams are continuing their work to find the missing person,” wrote Santander Mayor Gema Igual on X. Maritime and air units, police, and firefighters are participating in the rescue operation. The victims, a group of seven young people who had come to enjoy nature, were on a wooden walkway connecting two small cliffs when it collapsed, Igual told the press, describing it as a great tragedy.
The rescued person was "apparently suffering from hypothermia" and was hospitalized. The sea was particularly rough on Tuesday.
