To appease his MAGA base, Donald Trump is stoking fears about immigration. Somalia has just violently borne the brunt of this.

Once again, Donald Trump is not using diplomatic language to express his opinions about certain countries. The problem is that this unfiltered way of speaking can flirt with, or even cross, the line into insult or racism. For the American president, it can also serve to solidify his "MAGA" base by stoking their fears, primarily regarding immigration.

And on Tuesday, it was a country in the Horn of Africa that bore the brunt of the White House occupant's wrath. Donald Trump launched into a fierce tirade against Somalia, asserting that migrants from this African nation should not be welcome in the United States. The American president was speaking about a scandal in the state of Minnesota, where, according to local authorities, more than a billion dollars were paid into nonexistent social services, primarily through fraudulent invoices issued by Somali Americans.

A Democratic elected official insulted

In Somalia, "they have nothing, they just kill each other," Donald Trump declared during a cabinet meeting. "Their country is worthless for one reason or another. Their country is rotten, and we don't want them here." "We are at a tipping point," he added, noting that the United States would be making "the wrong choice if we continue to welcome garbage into our country."

Emphasizing that Somali Americans "contribute nothing," he specifically attacked Ilhan Omar, a Democratic congresswoman from Minnesota who is of Somali origin and a vocal critic of the U.S. government. "Ilhan Omar is trash. Her friends are trash," said Donald Trump. "They should go back where they came from and sort out their problems."

Visa restrictions

The Democrat, who is regularly targeted by the American president, then responded on X: "His obsession with me is frightening. I hope he can get the (psychological) help he desperately needs."

Donald Trump announced last week his intention to "permanently suspend immigration from all Third World countries." The US government already imposed entry bans or visa restrictions on nationals of 19 countries, including Somalia, last June.
