Etats-Unis : Plus de 600.000 clients américains privés d’électricité par la tempête hivernale
Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana in the south have the largest number of residential and commercial customers without electricity.
Snow and freezing rain have paralyzed parts of the United States. The country is being swept by a powerful winter storm, from Texas (south) to the northeast. As a result, more than 600,000 customers were without power early Sunday, according to the specialized website poweroutage.us.
Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana in the south have the largest number of residential and commercial customers without power, each exceeding 100,000. Kentucky (east-central) and Georgia (southeast) are also particularly affected, with tens of thousands of homes impacted.
State of emergency in 20 states
This major winter storm reached the northeastern United States on Sunday after hitting some southern and central states. It is accompanied by heavy snowfall and could lead to ice accumulations in some areas with potentially "locally catastrophic" consequences, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
In total, 20 states, as well as the US capital, Washington, D.C., declared a state of emergency. More than 14,000 flights to and from the United States were canceled over the weekend, and thousands more were delayed, according to FlightAware.
The storm, described as "unusually widespread and long-lasting" by the NWS, is caused by the arrival of an Arctic air mass from Canada.
