Fatou Diome : « Éric Zemmour, je peux l’inviter à dîner, je choisirai même un excellent resto… »
Fatou Diome, the French-Senegalese writer, was recently on the set of TV5 Monde to discuss her new book, "No Night Will Be Black." The book is a tribute to her grandfather. She recounts her close relationship with this man, who was a central figure in her childhood. She also talks about the rejection she experienced in Niodior and xenophobia in Europe. Two similar realities.
"What do you want a right-wing extremist to tell me that could be..."
"Just because my name is Diome, the 'wolves' and the 'wolf cubs' told me I was a foreigner, because my father wasn't from this village. What do you expect a right-wing extremist to tell me that could be surprising to me? Nothing at all. I know his narrow-mindedness, with his identity-based compartments. There are people who think like that, even in my area," she said.
Speaking of right-wing extremists, the journalist reminds her that she had harsh words for Éric Zemmour and Marine Le Pen.
"You said in an interview that he (Zemmour) should be put on a boat," he said.
She quickly clarified that her comments were made in response to the polemicist who "wanted to send immigrants out of France."
"The legitimacy that allows him to stay (in France) is exactly the same that allows me to stay."
The goal was to remind him that he also came from elsewhere. "The legitimacy that allows him to stay is exactly the same that allows me to stay, so if he fires me, it will start with him," Fatou Diome said.
Her counterpart asked her if she would tolerate talking to Zemmour or Marine Le Pen today. Her response was immediate.
"Of course I'll accept. I can even invite them to dinner, no problem... A good coffee, why not? Soon it will get cold, I think it's a time when we could talk. I will choose an excellent restaurant with very good quality food, we will look each other in the eye and we will assume who we are. We will defend our vision of the people who constitute the Republic of Marianne of which I am a part. When it was necessary to fight and die for France, my people were there" said Fatou Diome.
She finds it entirely consistent that the children of these African riflemen come to earn a salary in France. "We have to tolerate their being here, otherwise it would be a lack of gratitude," she assured.
