France: Brigitte Macron qualifie de "sale connes" des militantes féministes ayant interrompu un spectacle d'humoriste
French President Brigitte Macron's wife called feminist activists who interrupted the show of comedian Ary Abittan, who had been accused of rape, "dirty bitches," with the entourage of the head of state referring to "criticism of the radical method used" by this group.
On Saturday evening, four activists from the feminist collective #NousToutes, wearing masks bearing the image of Mr. Abittan with the word "rapist", interrupted his show in the Parisian venue Folies Bergère, chanting "Abittan rapist", the organization reported in a statement.
In late 2021, the comedian was accused of rape by a young woman he had been seeing for a few weeks. After a three-year investigation, the case was dismissed, a decision upheld on appeal in January. However, his return to the stage has since been contested by feminists who regularly protest outside the venues where he performs.
The day after this interruption, on Sunday, Brigitte Macron went to see Mr. Abittan's show. In a video published Monday by the website of the weekly magazine Public, the First Lady can be seen showing her support for the comedian before the performance.
"I'm scared," he told her. "If there are any nasty bitches, we'll throw them out," Brigitte Macron replied, laughing. "Especially masked bandits," she added.
The #NousToutes collective shared this video on its Instagram account along with messages of support for its action on Saturday night, and used the hashtag #salesconnes on the Bluesky network.
"We are deeply shocked and outraged. The words used speak volumes about her worldview; the political message is extremely shocking," a #NousToutes Paris Nord activist who participated in the action and identified herself as Gwen told AFP. "It's yet another insult to the victims and feminist organizations."
When contacted by AFP, sources close to Brigitte Macron asserted that "this exchange should be seen simply as criticism of the radical methods employed by those who, wearing masks, disrupted Ary Abittan's show on Saturday evening to prevent the artist from performing." "Brigitte Macron does not approve of these radical methods," the same source added.
The incident sparked criticism. Actress Judith Godrèche, for example, offered her support to the group with a message on Instagram: "I'm a real bitch too. And I support everyone else."
"These remarks are extremely serious," "a first lady should not say that," denounced Marine Tondelier, the head of the Greens, on the BFMTV channel.
