France: Le chef d'extrême droite Bardella agressé lors d'une séance de dédicace
Jordan Bardella, the president of the National Rally (RN) - the main French far-right party - favorite in the polls, was attacked on Saturday during a book signing in Moissac, in southwestern France, during which a septuagenarian smashed an egg on his head.
The alleged attacker, aged 74, was arrested and taken into custody for "violence against a person holding public authority without causing incapacity", Montauban prosecutor Bruno Sauvage told AFP.
According to the gendarmerie, which carried out the arrest, this man was in the line for the autograph session and threw himself at Jordan Bardella - the far-right leader Bardella who is also a Member of the European Parliament - breaking an egg on his head.
Security personnel intervened and the president of the National Rally was not injured, a source within the party indicated, adding that he was then able to resume the book signing for his book "What the French Want".
At this stage neither the police nor the prosecutor's office have been able to specify whether the person in custody was seen among a group of anti-RN protesters, as claimed by the far-right party.
A complaint has been filed on behalf of Jordan Bardella and the RN, the movement stated.
On Tuesday, the leader of the National Rally was flour-bombed during a visit to an agricultural fair in Vesoul, eastern France, and a 17-year-old high school student was taken into custody before being released the following day. The minor will have to attend a citizenship course.
"The further we progress, the closer we get to power, the more the violence of the far left, intolerance and pure stupidity is unleashed," reacted Jordan Bardella on X on Saturday night.
"But a wind of freedom, national pride and patriotism is blowing across France that they will not be able to stop," he continued, while confirming that he was doing well.
Jordan Bardella is the favorite in the first round of the 2027 French presidential election, according to a Verian poll for the magazine L'Hémicycle published on Friday.
He would largely dominate the first round of the election if it were held now, with 35.5% to 36.5% of voting intentions depending on the configurations tested, far ahead of the next two candidates, former right-wing Prime Minister Edouard Philippe (16.5%-17%) and the leader of the Place publique party (left) Raphaël Glucksmann (11.5%-13%).
