France : le patron d'un important groupe public interpellé pour achat de cocaïne

The president of a major French public group, the National Audiovisual Institute (INA), was arrested in Paris at the end of July after having cocaine delivered to his home, AFP learned on Tuesday from judicial and police sources.

Laurent Vallet, 55, was arrested at his home by police on July 29, a source close to the case added.

As this was his first arrest, he was "referred to a therapeutic injunction," a judicial source told AFP.

The INA's mission is to archive television and radio images and sounds and to promote these collections. Contacted by AFP, the public institution did not immediately respond.

It all began with police following a 17-year-old boy into the inner courtyard of a building, a police source told AFP. As he left, they arrested him and discovered he was carrying €600. The young man told them he had gone to see a friend.

The police then contacted the "friend," who was in fact the president of the INA. He admitted to having bought €600 worth of cocaine from the young man and handed the drugs over to the police.

Cocaine generally sells for around 60 euros per gram, retail, in France.

Mr. Vallet was reappointed in May for a third five-year term as head of the INA, on the proposal of the French Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati.

He has been president of this public body since May 2015. He succeeded Agnès Saal, who had been in the position for less than a year. She was forced to resign at the request of the then Minister of Culture, Fleur Pellerin, after taxi fares exceeding €40,000 over ten months were revealed.

Before heading the INA, Laurent Vallet was since 2002 the Director General of the Institute for the Financing of Cinema and Cultural Industries (IFCIC), a credit institution that aims to facilitate access to credit for cultural businesses. He is a graduate of the French higher education institutions Sciences Po, HEC, and ENA.
