France: l'ex-président Sarkozy dit qu'il ne s'associerait pas à un "front républicain" contre l'extrême droite

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy assured far-right leader Marine Le Pen that he would not join any potential "republican front" against her party, the RN, and called for "the broadest possible coalition," according to excerpts from his forthcoming book.

In "The Journal of a Prisoner", the book devoted to his 20 days of detention, in bookstores on Wednesday and of which excerpts are published Sunday by the newspaper La Tribune, the former head of state reports a telephone conversation with Mrs. Le Pen.

Mr. Sarkozy had contacted her after his conviction to five years in prison in the trial of the alleged Libyan financing of his 2007 campaign to thank her for having defended him.

During the exchange, he reports in his book, Ms. Le Pen asked him: "Your voice carries weight with the popular electorate, will you join any kind of republican front" in future elections?

"My answer was unambiguous: 'No, and moreover, I will stand by it by taking a public position on the matter when the time comes,'" the former president writes. Later in the book, he argues that "the path to rebuilding the right can only be achieved through the broadest possible spirit of unity, without exclusion or condemnation."

The president of the Hauts-de-France region (north), Xavier Bertrand, who was his Minister of Labour, said for his part that he preferred "the political positions of Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007 to (those) in 2025", stressing that at the time he "fought the National Rally, both through action and convictions".

Furthermore, in his book, Mr. Sarkozy has harsh words for President Emmanuel Macron, who granted him an interview shortly before his incarceration on October 21: "I had nothing to say to him and hardly wanted a friendly discussion with him."

On September 25, this former champion of the French right was sentenced in the first instance to five years in prison for "criminal association", found guilty of knowingly allowing his collaborators to approach Libya under dictator Muammar Gaddafi to solicit covert funding for his victorious 2007 presidential campaign.

Having been imprisoned, he appealed and will be tried again from March 16 to June 3 by the Paris Court of Appeal.

The court released him after 20 days in prison but imposed a ban on him leaving France, contacting the other defendants and a number of people, including the current Minister of Justice Gérald Darmanin, who had paid him a controversial visit in prison on October 29.
