This is certainly not a better way to go down in his country's history. Nicolas Sarkozy is the first French leader to go to prison. The former president was incarcerated last October after being sentenced to five years in prison for conspiracy in the Libyan financing of his presidential campaign. He was released from La Santé prison on Monday, November 10, after 21 days of detention following a decision by the Paris Court of Appeal, which opted to place him under judicial supervision.

During his time in prison, Nicolas Sarkozy kept himself busy by writing a book, which he titled "A Prisoner's Diary." In this work, the former resident of the Élysée Palace discusses his disagreements with Emmanuel Macron. He says he distanced himself from him after the dissolution of Parliament in June 2024. "Since his disastrous decision to dissolve the National Assembly in 2024, our relationship had become strained. I didn't understand, much less accept, what I considered a whim that does as much harm to France as to its author," Nicolas Sarkozy writes in his book.

Recently invited to the YouTube channel Legend, the former French president said he fully accepts his opposition to this decision by Macron.

"This decision is a disastrous one that has done a lot of harm to the country, since it has plunged it into the period of uncertainty and chaos that we see today. A disastrous decision for the president who, since then, has had a lot of trouble regaining the trust of the French people around him," said the Paris native.
