Gaza: l'Allemagne va lever ses restrictions d'exportation d'armes vers Israël
Germany will lift its partial arms export embargo to Israel on November 24, which was imposed in early August in response to the expansion of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, a government spokesman announced on Monday.
"Since October 10, we have had a ceasefire in Gaza which has largely stabilized," Sebastian Hille said at a press briefing, justifying the decision.
"From November 24, arms exports to Israel will again be possible under the usual case-by-case review procedures," he said.
Berlin expects Israel and Hamas to "respect the agreements reached," which includes "maintaining the ceasefire" and "providing large-scale humanitarian aid," he added.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on August 8 that he was suspending the export of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip, in response to Israeli plans to take control of Gaza City.
This partial embargo had drawn public criticism from members of his party, the CDU, who said that the decision went against the fundamental principles of Germany and the party.
Because of its historical responsibility in the Holocaust, Germany has become one of Israel's biggest supporters in recent decades.
Unlike France and the United Kingdom, which did so in September, Berlin has not yet recognized a Palestinian state, believing that such recognition should only come at the end of a negotiation process for a two-state solution.
But Berlin's tone towards Israel had hardened in recent months, as the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip deteriorated dramatically.
"Welcoming" Berlin's announcement, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called on "other governments to adopt similar decisions".
Spain, one of the most vehement voices in Europe regarding Israel's military actions in Gaza, notably adopted an arms embargo on the comings and goings to Israel at the beginning of October.
