According to government data released Friday, Japan now has nearly 100,000 people aged 100 or older, the vast majority of whom are women. This sharply rising number is driving up medical and social costs as the country sinks into an unprecedented demographic crisis.
These figures confirm Japan's aging population. As of September 1, the country had 99,763 centenarians, 4,644 more than a year earlier, and 88% of them were women, the Japanese Ministry of Health detailed in a press release published this Friday.
The oldest person in the archipelago is Shigeko Kagawa. Aged 114, she lives in Nara Prefecture, near Kyoto, and has remained active past the age of 80 as an obstetrician-gynecologist and general practitioner, according to the ministry.
"Walking a lot during home visits allowed me to develop strong legs, which are the source of my current vitality," she explained in the statement.
"silent emergency"
While this longevity may be the stuff of dreams, on a larger scale it poses a serious problem in Japan, which is facing a worsening demographic crisis. The growth of its elderly population is leading to soaring medical and social costs, and a shrinking workforce to fund them, even as the birth rate remains low.
According to official data released in August, Japan's population has seen a record decline of more than 900,000 people in 2024.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who has now resigned, had called the situation a "silent emergency," promising family-friendly measures, such as more flexible work schedules and free childcare, to try to reverse the trend. The authorities' efforts have so far yielded no significant results.
The Japanese government approved a record budget in December 2024, with an increased social security envelope to address the aging population, in particular.
