Le chef de l'ONU alerte sur son "effondrement financier imminent"
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sounded the alarm on Friday, warning member states of an "imminent financial collapse" of the organization if some continue to refuse to pay.
The institution has "already overcome" difficult periods financially "but the current situation is radically different," Mr. Guterres said in a letter to member countries seen by AFP.
The reason given is the "decisions" of countries, which he does not name, "not to honor mandatory contributions financing a significant part of the approved ordinary budget".
Hostile to the multilateralism advocated by the United Nations, the United States, in particular, has in recent months refused to honor or delayed certain mandatory payments and reduced its funding to certain UN agencies.
In early January, Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of 66 international organizations "that no longer serve American interests," including 31 linked to the UN.
The American president has also launched a "Peace Council", initially intended to implement his plan for Gaza but which, according to its critics, actually aims to become a rival organization to the UN.
Although more than 150 member states (out of 193) have paid their dues, the United Nations ended 2025 with $1.6 billion in unpaid contributions, more than double the amount in 2024.
And the institution is facing a "related problem" that is further affecting its cash flow: it has to reimburse member states for expenses not incurred, explained Farhan Haq, one of the spokesmen for the head of the organization, during a press briefing.
"We are caught in a Kafkaesque cycle: we are expected to return money that does not exist," laments Mr. Guterres in his letter.
These gaps regularly force the organization to freeze hiring, delay payments, or cut back on its missions.
For the UN chief, this is no longer sufficient.
He fears he will not be able to "fully execute the 2026 program budget approved in December." "Even worse, (...) the liquidity of the ordinary budget could be exhausted as early as July," he estimates.
Antonio Guterres, whose mandate expires at the end of the year, is therefore calling on member states to "fully and on time honor their payment obligations" or to "thoroughly review (the) financial rules" of the organization.
At $3.4 billion, the 2026 budget is down 7% compared to the previous year. Member states also approved the elimination of approximately 2,400 positions, finalizing one of the most stringent budget decisions in recent years.
On paper, the United States is the largest contributor to the UN, providing 22% for the period 2025-2027, according to a calculation method based on each member state's ability to pay, determined by its national income. China is now second, contributing around 20%.

L'onu devient donc une dictature et un instrument légal aux mains d'une poignée d'état qui dictent leur volonté aux reste du monde.
C'est donc tout à fait normal qu'elle disparaissent tôt ou tard.
La nouvelle coalition de la paix mise en place par Trump présage une mort lente de l'onu.
Et le Macky qui rêvait un poste dans l'organisation, il risque de déchanter.
C'était une initiative des États-Unis après la grande guerre et maintenant un américain répondant au nom de Donald Trump travaille à son démantèlement prochain.
