How could Tyler Robinson, a brilliant high school student raised Mormon by Republican parents, have gone so far as to kill influencer Charlie Kirk, a favorite with pro-Trump youth? This question is stirring up trouble in Washington, a small town in Utah.
The 22-year-old suspect, arrested Thursday evening after a 33-hour manhunt, grew up in this western town surrounded by glowing canyons and mountains.
His parents' house is a typical middle-class American detached house, nestled on a winding street with manicured lawns. In this neighborhood backed by the local church, Kris Schwiermann is in shock.
Tyler was the eldest of three boys, a "quiet, respectful, rather reserved, but really very intelligent" child, the former caretaker of his primary school, now retired, told AFP.
"He was the ideal student, the kind of person you would like to have in your class," confirms Jaida Funk, who worked with him from elementary school to high school, between the ages of 5 and 16.
“I always thought he would become a businessman or CEO one day, rather than what I'm learning about him now,” the 22-year-old continues. “It's really unexpected.”
At school, "he was reserved, but not weird, he had friends and spoke to different groups," she recalls.
After graduating from high school with flying colors in 2021, Tyler briefly attended university before branching out into an electrical apprenticeship program at a local technical college.
Her parents, a granite countertop salesman and a healthcare professional working with the disabled, are Mormons like many Utahns, according to Schwiermann. But they no longer practice.
"It's been eight years since I saw them at church," continues the 66-year-old retiree.
Scrutinized by the American media, the photos left by the Robinsons on social networks tell the story of a family who loved to travel, camp and hunt with their children.
A banal lesson in firearms, which Tyler apparently recycled in a chilling way, killing Charlie Kirk with a bullet to the neck using a sniper rifle during a rally on the campus of Utah Valley University, a four-hour drive from Washington.
Although his parents are registered Republicans, the young man has not indicated any political affiliation. According to state records, he did not vote in 2024.
But according to Utah Governor Spencer Cox, who disclosed some of the investigation's findings on Friday, the young man had "become more politicized in recent years."
He allegedly shared his hostility toward Charlie Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump, with a family member, authorities said. His father allegedly convinced him to turn himself in to police.
Investigators also found messages with an anti-fascist tone—"Hey fascist! Get that!" and a reference to the Italian anti-fascist chant "Bella Ciao"—on bullet casings found near the crime scene.
Enough to label him a "far-left" killer for a large part of the American right.
Rather than a fervent activist, his former high school classmates portrayed him to the New York Times as a fan of shooter video games, such as "Halo" and "Call of Duty."
Tyler also didn't discuss politics with Jay, who had been dating him since January after joining a muscle car enthusiasts group.
"He was pretty shy, he was just a car enthusiast," the perplexed forty-year-old sighs, refusing to give his last name. "We just talked about our love for muscle cars, the noise they make and the way they drive."
His shiny gray Dodge Challenger was the only thing Tyler Robinson's neighbors knew about him in the subdivision where he lived in Saint George, ten minutes from his parents' house.
In this impersonal complex, the residents met by AFP did not even recognize him when the FBI released his photo during the manhunt.
Heather McKnight, her neighbor for more than a year, recalls a solitary, sullen-looking stranger who drove too fast for her liking.
"He was always distant, he never said hello. (...) He was just weird," says the 50-year-old nurse. "Who would have thought that this skinny little man who was getting in and out of his car would be capable of committing such a heinous act?"

Tu as parfaitement raison.
