Les jeunes de 17 ans vont bien recevoir une invitation pour le service militaire
The House of Representatives approved a bill Thursday in plenary session that would allow for the sending of an awareness letter to all 17-year-olds, offering them a year of voluntary military service. Only the Socialist Party, the Parti Socialiste de la République (PTB), and Ecolo-Groen voted against it.
The text was sponsored by Peter Buysrogge (N-VA) and co-signed by the other majority groups. In the future, every young person will receive a personal letter before their 18th birthday containing information on the possibilities of performing voluntary military service for twelve months.
Double the workforce within 10 years
Upon taking office, Defense Minister Theo Francken announced that he would intensify the army's recruitment efforts. Within ten years, the Defense Ministry intends to double its personnel to 34,500 military personnel, 12,800 reservists, and 8,500 civilians.
Privacy Policy
This letter sparked lengthy debates in Parliament. The Data Protection Authority, the Council of State, and the Federal Public Service for the Interior expressed serious reservations about privacy protection. The majority made amendments that failed to convince the opposition.
