L’Irak décrète trois jours de deuil pour le décès du guide suprême iranien
Iraq declared three days of national mourning on Sunday after the death of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in Israeli and American strikes on Iran.
"With deep sadness, we offer our condolences to the noble people of Iran and the entire Muslim world," following the death of Ali Khamenei in "a blatant act of aggression," said government spokesman Bassem al-Awadi, announcing the three-day mourning period.
He called for an immediate cessation of military operations which are "driving the region towards unprecedented levels of violence".
Hundreds of protesters attempted to storm the heavily fortified area housing the US embassy in Baghdad on Sunday morning, following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, an AFP journalist reported.
"Their attempts have so far been thwarted, but they continue to try" to break through the security forces' cordon, a security source told AFP.
The Iraqi government on Saturday condemned an "unjustified aggression" against Iran, warning against any use of Iraqi airspace and territory for these operations.
Iran exerts considerable influence over Iraqi politics and also supports armed groups whose power has increased both politically and financially in the country, a proxy battleground for decades between Washington and Tehran.
The Coordination Framework, a ruling alliance of Shiite groups with varying degrees of ties to Iran, expressed its "deep sadness and immense sorrow" over the "disappearance of the martyred leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei."
His "blood will remain a guiding light for all generations" and "the curse will continue to haunt the murderous Zionists for eternity," the alliance added.
The influential Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr had already announced three days of mourning in Iraq.
