Here is Nicolas Sarkozy's statement to the press following the Paris Criminal Court's verdict on Thursday, which sentenced him to five years in prison with deferred committal and provisional execution, thus sending him to prison soon:
"What happened today in this courtroom of the Paris Criminal Court is extremely serious for the rule of law, for the confidence we can have in justice.
More than ten years of investigation, millions of euros spent to find Libyan funding that the criminal court has just said could not, and for good reason, be found in my campaign.
The court went further by solemnly declaring that the Mediapart document which was at the origin of this procedure was, I quote, a fake.
I was brought before this court for four offenses. I was acquitted of three. No financing found, no corruption.
I am therefore condemned for having allegedly allowed two of my collaborators to have the idea - the idea - of illegally financing my campaign.
Over the years, I have assumed all my responsibilities. Naturally, I have not refused any hearing. I was taken into custody and I was questioned, examined, examined, in such a way that the presiding judge said: "There is no personal enrichment to be accused of."
No illegal financing of my campaign, no personal enrichment.
And the conclusion the court draws from this is that I must spend five years in prison.
And even though my address is known, I can be recognized in the street, and I have assumed all my responsibilities, the court orders provisional execution so that I can sleep in prison as soon as possible.
I ask the French people, whether they voted for me or not, whether they support me or not, to appreciate what has just happened.
Hatred therefore definitely has no limits.
I will assume my responsibilities, I will comply with court summonses, and if they absolutely want me to sleep in prison, I will sleep in prison. But with my head held high.
I am innocent. This injustice is a scandal. I will not accuse myself of something I did not do.
Naturally, I will appeal. I will probably have to appear in handcuffs before the Court of Appeal.
Those who hate me so much think they are humiliating me. What they have humiliated today is France. It is the image of France.
And if anyone is betraying the French, it's not me. It's this incredible injustice you just witnessed.
I have no spirit of revenge, I have no hatred and let everyone understand and hear it, I will fight until my last breath to prove my complete innocence."
