« On ne peut pas mourir comme ça » : colère après la mort mystérieuse d’un Sénégalais en Italie
Around a hundred people, including many Senegalese, demonstrated on September 28 in Piazza Dante, Campania (Italy), to demand "truth and justice" after the unexplained death in detention of Mamadou Khadialy Sylla, a 35-year-old Senegalese man.
In its Saturday, October 4 edition, L'Observateur explains that the victim, a tailor by profession, was arrested on September 25 at Caserta train station for alleged assault and theft. Sylla was reportedly violently restrained by the railway police using a restraint technique. Injured, he was taken to hospital for treatment before being imprisoned in Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison, where he was found dead the next day in circumstances that remain unclear.
His disappearance has provoked strong emotion and a strong mobilization of the Senegalese community, which denounces possible abuse and demands that full light be shed on the circumstances of his death.
According to the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group, an investigation into manslaughter has been opened. Three doctors are being investigated: two working at the prison and a third in the emergency medical service. They are suspected of administering medication to Sylla inappropriately or too closely together. An autopsy will now establish the exact cause of death and clear up any remaining mystery surrounding this tragedy.
Described as a respected and well-integrated tailor, the Senegalese man leaves the image of a peaceful and hard-working man, making his death all the more incomprehensible for his loved ones, the same source emphasizes.
