Prix Nobel : La réaction peu faire play de la Maison Blanche
The White House said Friday that the Nobel Peace Prize committee had put "politics before peace" by awarding the prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado rather than Donald Trump.
"President Trump will continue to make peace deals, end wars, and save lives," White House communications director Steven Cheung said on X. "The Nobel Committee has proven that it puts politics before peace."
"He has the heart of a humanitarian, and no one else can move mountains with the sheer force of his will," he added.
Born during his first term, Donald Trump's obsession with the Nobel Peace Prize has only grown since his return to power in January.
He claims to have ended several conflicts, giving as examples his mediations between India and Pakistan, Cambodia and Thailand, Egypt and Ethiopia, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Serbia and Kosovo...
Experts, however, believe that the American president is exaggerating his role, if not inventing it altogether.
On Thursday, Donald Trump said his role as mediator in the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire was the eighth war he had ended.
But this progress in Gaza, the result of strong pressure exerted by the American president on the belligerents, was probably too late for the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the prize, to have been able to take it into account.
Beyond the timing issues, many experts have also argued that his "America First" mantra runs counter to the ideals (international cooperation, brotherhood among peoples, and disarmament) contained in Alfred Nobel's (1833-1896) will.
