Protestations après des propos de l'ambassadeur américain sur le droit d'Israël à occuper des terres
Several Arab countries protested on Saturday after comments by the US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, who claimed that according to biblical tradition, Israel has a right to lands extending over a large part of the Middle East.
Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist pastor and fervent supporter of Israel, nominated to be ambassador in 2025 by President Donald Trump, was interviewed by American conservative commentator Tucker Carlson.
In a podcast broadcast on Friday, Tucker Carlson questioned the ambassador about his interpretation of a verse in Genesis which states that Israel has rights to the lands located "between the Nile and the Euphrates," thus extending from Egypt to Iraq and Syria.
"I think that's correct. And that would basically encompass the entire Middle East," Mr. Huckabee said.
"It would be good if they took everything," he added.
Several Arab countries have strongly condemned these remarks.
Saudi Arabia called them "irresponsible" and "dangerous", while Jordan denounced "an attack on the sovereignty of the countries of the region".
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs "reaffirmed that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territories, nor over any other Arab land."
The Palestinian Authority, based in the occupied West Bank, told X that Mike Huckabee's remarks "contradicted US President Donald Trump's rejection of Israel's plan to annex the West Bank."
Kuwait denounced the statements as a "flagrant violation of the principles of international law," while the Sultanate of Oman said they "threatened the prospects for peace, security and stability in the region," according to separate statements from their foreign ministries.
On Saturday, the American ambassador posted two messages on X to clarify his position on other topics discussed during the interview, including the definition of Zionism, but he did not revisit his remarks concerning Israel's control of territories in the Middle East.
These statements come as Israel intensifies measures aimed at increasing its control over the West Bank, a Palestinian territory occupied since 1967.
Israel has annexed East Jerusalem and part of the Syrian Golan Heights.
