Réseau de "mariages blancs" aux Etats-Unis : 11 personnes inculpées
Four other individuals have already been charged in recent months in connection with the same case. All face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
According to the indictment seen by AFP, the network paid members of the US Navy for sham marriages with Chinese nationals.
Prior to this latest indictment, four former Marines, including two women, had already pleaded guilty to participating in a scam that offered up to $45,000 for a fake marriage.
The indictment specifies that the individuals involved were also seeking to obtain Navy identity cards, known as "common access cards" (CACs), which allow access to military bases.
"This puts at risk the safety and security of our military installations," said U.S. Attorney Gregory Kehoe at a press conference Wednesday in Jacksonville, Florida, where several fake weddings took place.
"Sham marriages" were also arranged in New York, Connecticut and Nevada between March 2024 and February 2025, the Justice Department said.
