"Everyone is in danger" in the United States, warned writer Salman Rushdie, who himself survived a violent knife attack three years ago, after the deaths of two Americans killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

Interviewed by AFP on Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, the 78-year-old British-American writer said that "the idea of danger and violence is now close to everyone in this country."

"I think everyone is in danger now," he warned.

The writer was attending the premiere of "Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie", a documentary adapted from "Knife", his account of the attack that nearly killed him in August 2022 during a literary conference and caused him to lose the use of one eye.

His attacker accused the author of "The Satanic Verses", which earned Salman Rushdie a death sentence from Iran in 1989, of having "attacked Islam".

He was sentenced last year to 25 years in prison in the United States.

For Salman Rushdie, the attack he suffered is part of "something larger".

Denouncing "a violence unleashed by unscrupulous individuals who use ignorant people to attack (...) culture", he argued that "for those who wield authoritarian power, culture is the enemy".

"Whether it's journalism, universities, music or writing, the uncultured, the ignorant and the radicals don't like it, and they take action against it, which we see every day," he added to AFP.

Donald Trump has launched an offensive against major American universities, which are considered too left-wing.

He also regularly attacks traditional media, denouncing their "lies".

Salman Rushdie clarified that "Knife" was not conceived as a commentary on current events.

But "I'm starting to think that the film may be arriving at a particularly opportune time, that we may all be feeling the risk of violence today," he concluded.

The Sundance Film Festival continues until February 1st.

Salman Rushdie, you sought fame by attacking the very foundations and principles of life—in short, the faith—of over two billion Muslims worldwide, representing approximately 26% of the global population. Meanwhile, you seem to forget that in the United States, your adopted home, you have had to respect the laws and show consideration to the citizens of this country, a nation of far less than half a billion inhabitants, regardless of religion. In my humble opinion, you must repent while you are still alive. Ask forgiveness from Allah, the Merciful, or, if you are an atheist, ask forgiveness from the Islamic Ummah (its members are your fellow inhabitants on this earth), which has been deeply offended!
