Trump aux Européens: “Sans nous, vous parleriez tous allemand aujourd’hui”
Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, Donald Trump was quick to remind everyone of his country's decisive role in World War II. Without the United States, most Europeans "would be speaking German today, and probably a little Japanese," he declared. Quite a scene.
During his highly anticipated speech in Davos, the American president once again criticized his European “allies,” emphasizing in particular the crucial role of the United States during World War II. This provided an opportunity to launch a sharp barb at Copenhagen. Not only did Denmark quickly surrender to Nazi Germany (“after six hours of fighting,” according to him), but the American military also had to intervene to secure Greenland, then a Danish colony, due to the impotence of the Scandinavian forces.
“It was silly to return it, but we returned it.”
Donald Trump also recalled that the United States had subsequently returned the Arctic island territory to Denmark at the end of the war, a decision he bitterly regrets today: “It was stupid to give it back, but we gave it back,” he told the audience, before deeming it relevant to add: “Without the United States, you would all be speaking German today, and maybe a little Japanese.”
German, the most spoken language in Switzerland
This comment is certainly striking for several reasons. Firstly, Germany is now a long-standing ally and a member of NATO, and Japan is a strategic military ally, very useful to the Americans in the Pacific against Chinese ambitions. Secondly, Davos, where the World Economic Forum (WEF) is held every year, is a predominantly German-speaking (and Alemannic-speaking) municipality in the trilingual (German, Italian, and Romansh) Swiss canton of Graubünden, itself predominantly German-speaking (around 15%). Finally, according to Wikipedia (2018 figures), German is by far the most widely spoken language in Switzerland, with 62.2% of speakers who undoubtedly appreciated Donald Trump's history lesson.
