Trump avertit Israël de ne pas "interférer" avec la Syrie

Donald Trump warned Israel on Monday against any interference in Syria that could jeopardize the Arab country's transition to a "prosperous state," following an incursion by Israeli forces into southern Syria on Friday.

"It is very important that Israel maintain a strong and genuine dialogue with Syria, that nothing interfere with Syria's development into a prosperous state," the US president said on his Truth Social platform, stating that the United States was "very pleased with the results shown" by Damascus.

An Israeli forces raid on a village in southern Syria on Friday left 13 people dead, according to Damascus, while the Israeli army claimed to have targeted an Islamist group.

Since the fall nearly a year ago of President Bashar al-Assad, overthrown by an Islamist coalition, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes and incursions into Syria. Friday's operation was the deadliest of these, and the Syrian Foreign Ministry denounced it as a "war crime."

In early November, Donald Trump received the new Syrian head of state, Ahmad al-Sharaa, at the White House for a cordial visit, during which the former jihadist announced that his country would join the international coalition against the Islamic State (IS) group.

"Syria's new president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, is working diligently to ensure that good things happen and that Syria and Israel have a long and prosperous relationship together in the future," Donald Trump said Monday in his post on Truth Social.

"This is a historic opportunity, and it adds to the SUCCESS already achieved for PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST," he stated.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad, Israel has deployed troops in the demilitarized zone on the Golan Heights, beyond the demarcation line between the part of this Syrian territory unilaterally annexed by Israel in 1981 and the rest of Syria.

Israel attaches "immense importance" to its military presence in the buffer zone in Syria, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on November 19 during a visit to Israeli soldiers deployed in the area supposed to be under UN control.

This visit had been denounced by Damascus and the UN.

During the summer, high-level contacts took place between Israeli and Syrian officials, with the help of Paris and Washington, with both sides indicating a desire to reach a security agreement.

But Benjamin Netanyahu is demanding for this a demilitarization of the entire part of Syrian territory running from south of Damascus to the 1974 demarcation line, established after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.
