TRUMP : «C'est un scandale que le G20 se tienne en Afrique du Sud»
Donald Trump announced on Friday on his Truth Social network that no American official would participate in the next G20 summit in South Africa, reports AFP.
"It is a scandal that the G20 is being held in South Africa," wrote the president, who accuses the country of persecuting and killing white farmers. "No representative of the American government will participate as long as these human rights violations continue," he said.
In May at the White House, Donald Trump ambushed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa by showing him a video riddled with errors intended to prove his accusations, which South Africa rejects.
He then announced that he would not attend the first G20 summit held on the African continent himself, but would be represented by JD Vance.
The South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over Donald Trump's recent comments and stated that it looked forward to hosting the summit scheduled for November 22 and 23 in Johannesburg between the world's largest economies.
"Characterizing Afrikaners as an exclusively white group is ahistorical. Furthermore, the claim that this community is persecuted is not supported by facts," the ministry said in a statement.
"South Africa remains focused on its positive contributions globally," the ministry continued. With "its own journey from racial and ethnic division to democracy, our country is uniquely positioned to champion within the G20 a future of genuine solidarity, where shared prosperity bridges deep inequalities," it added.
Pretoria chose "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability" as the theme for its G20 presidency, but encountered resistance, notably from Washington.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is boycotting G20 ministerial meetings.
The G20 is composed of 19 countries and two regional organizations (European Union and African Union) and represents more than 80% of global gross domestic product.
Donald Trump also targeted another African country: Nigeria, where he raised the threat of armed intervention, citing persecution of Christians.
"Recent foreign claims suggesting systemic religious persecution in Nigeria are unfounded," responded Dunoma Umar Ahmed, Permanent Secretary of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
