Trump presse Zelensky de conclure un "accord" pour mettre fin à la guerre

Donald Trump, who is displaying renewed complicity with Vladimir Putin, urged Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday to cease hostilities, while remaining deaf to the Ukrainian president's requests for increased military support.

"The meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was very interesting and cordial, but I told him, as I also strongly suggested to President Putin, that it was time to stop the killing and find an AGREEMENT," he wrote on his Truth Social network, judging that the two belligerents should "stop where they are."

"Let them both claim victory, let history decide. Enough shooting, enough death," he added, before flying to Florida.

Upon his arrival, he reiterated his call to reporters: Ukraine and Russia should "immediately stop at the current front line."

"Respect the front line, wherever it is, otherwise it will become too complicated," he said.

For his part, the Ukrainian president acknowledged the refusal so far to accept his quest for American Tomahawk missiles.

"I think Russia is afraid of the Tomahawk, really afraid, because it is a powerful weapon," Volodymyr Zelensky said at a press conference after his more than two-hour meeting with his American counterpart at the White House.

Does he hope to receive this weapon? "I am realistic," he replied.

- "Thousands" of drones -

Donald Trump had already expressed his reservations about a potential delivery to Ukraine of these missiles with a range of 1,600 kilometers, to which Moscow is totally opposed.

"I hope we can end the war without having to think about Tomahawks," the American president told reporters, sitting opposite his Ukrainian counterpart at a large table set for lunch.

These missiles would allow Ukraine to strike deep into Russia. During the meeting with Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky proposed an exchange with "thousands" of Ukrainian drones.

This did not convince the American president, nor did the "maps" of potential Russian targets that he showed him, according to a Ukrainian source.

Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russian president was "not ready" for peace, but Donald Trump argued the opposite during an exchange with reporters before their working lunch.

"President Putin wants to end the war," said the American president, who had a long conversation with the Kremlin master on Thursday.

The Russian and American leaders agreed to meet soon in Budapest, Hungary, during a meeting described as "very productive" by the American side and "extremely frank and full of trust" by the Russian side.

- "Very strong leader" -

Donald Trump said it was "possible" that Vladimir Putin was trying to play for time, in response to a question from an AFP journalist, but he also said: "All my life, the best have tried to play me. And I've done really well."

As winter approaches, Russia is stepping up its attacks on enemy energy infrastructure. On Friday, it also claimed responsibility for the capture of three Ukrainian villages.

In this context, the renewed closeness of the American president with Vladimir Putin is cause for concern in kyiv, especially since Donald Trump gave a very positive account of his meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky the previous day on Friday.

The US president also had kind words for Volodymyr Zelensky, however: "A very strong leader, a man who has been through a lot and a man I have come to know well."

His last summit with Vladimir Putin, on August 15 in Alaska, ended without any concrete prospect of peace.

However, the American president did not subsequently carry out his threats of heavy sanctions against Moscow.

Upon his return to power in January, Donald Trump broke the isolation in which Western powers had kept Moscow since the Russian invasion of February 2022 and called into question the military aid granted to Ukraine.
