Un ancien ministre de l’Agriculture chinois condamné à mort pour corruption
Former Chinese Agriculture Minister Tang Renjian was sentenced to death on Sunday for corruption, with a two-year stay of execution, a court in the northeast of the country announced.
Mr. Tang accepted bribes in cash and goods totaling more than 268 million yuan (32 million euros) from 2007 to 2024, the Changchun People's Court in Jilin province said in a statement.
These bribes "caused particularly serious losses to the interests of the state and the people, and therefore justified the death penalty," the statement said, assuring that the accused had confessed to his "crimes" and expressed remorse.
The conviction is the latest in a sweeping anti-corruption crackdown by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which has seen several high-ranking figures brought down.
Supporters of the campaign say it promotes clean governance, but critics say it gives the president the power to sideline political rivals.
Before becoming Minister of Agriculture (2020-2024), Mr. Tang had notably served as governor of Gansu province (northwest), as well as vice president of the autonomous region of Guangxi (south).
His fall follows similar corruption investigations targeting former defense ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe.
Mr. Li was dismissed from his post just seven months after taking office and subsequently expelled from the Chinese Communist Party for offenses including suspected corruption, according to state media. His successor, Dong Jun, now defense minister, was also reportedly investigated for corruption.
