US President Donald Trump's administration said Wednesday it had fired a State Department employee who failed to disclose his romantic relationship with a Chinese national.
"The State Department has formally terminated the employment of a Foreign Service officer who admitted to concealing a romantic relationship with a Chinese national known for her ties to the Chinese Communist Party," said State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott.
The employee, whose identity has not been revealed, had declared on camera that the Chinese national "could have been a spy," the State Department explained, although it did not specify whether there was evidence of espionage against him.
The fired employee also said that his partner's father was "a die-hard Communist Party member."
The State Department also said this was the first known layoff under an executive order Trump signed shortly after taking office, in which he ordered all employees to "faithfully implement the policies of the president."
"We will maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any employee caught harming our country's national security," Pigott said.
Earlier this year, the United States announced it would ban its employees in China from having romantic relationships with locals, a rare move reminiscent of the Cold War.
