1,7 milliard F CFA de Postefinances : Diop Sy dans de beaux draps
The Postefinances case has resurfaced. The judge of the second chamber of the Dakar court has reopened the case that led to the imprisonment of three former executives of this branch of La Poste (the postal service). The case, opened in December 2021, concerns the embezzlement of 1.7 billion CFA francs. These are loans granted to businessmen who never repaid the amounts owed.
The defendants are being prosecuted for embezzlement of public funds and complicity in embezzlement of public funds. The investigating magistrate had asked them to reimburse the funds or face imprisonment.
Diop Sy is one of them. The mayor of Tivaouane had received a loan of 260 million. "At the time, summoned by the court, the elected official made a formal commitment to repay the entire sum. A commitment that, to this day, has not been honored," reports L'Observateur, citing "judicial sources." Tired of broken promises, the judge has ordered investigators from the Dakar Urban Security Division to conduct a formal hearing to determine the reasons for this failure to repay.
The daily newspaper reports that Diop Sy has been missing "since the receipt of this judicial delegation", proving "difficult to reach, not answering calls or messages from investigators".
The newspaper continues: “This situation led the police to raid one of his residences in Dakar. [But] they were informed that he no longer lived there. According to the latest reports, he has been located in the city of Tivaouane. Under these circumstances, the police services in that town could be asked to take over the proceedings and ensure his summons, on the judge's instructions.”
