31 millions F CFA détournés : le maire de Kanène Ndiob épinglé
The National Office for the Fight against Fraud and Corruption (OFNAC) has received a complaint against the mayor of the commune of Kanène Ndiob, in office since February 12, 2022, for forgery, use of forgery and financial embezzlement.
Quoted by Libération, the plaintiff claims that, although the 2022 municipal budget was unanimously adopted at the end of April of that year, in the presence of the sub-prefect, accounting falsifications were discovered during its closing in December. The irregularities noted relate in particular to spending on health, hygiene, social action, and the purchase of pharmaceutical products. The mayor is also accused of having presented verbal figures that differed from those recorded in official documents.
An in-depth investigation was conducted from July 31 to August 5, 2023. Six people, including municipal officials and service providers, were interviewed. Investigators also examined accounting and budgetary documents and conducted a physical inspection of public works included in the municipal budget.
The investigation's findings suggest a possible prosecution of the mayor for criminal conspiracy, fraud involving public funds—estimated at more than 31.1 million CFA francs—and mismanagement. The supplier-contractor involved could be prosecuted for complicity in fraud.
The OFNAC's final report has been forwarded to the financial prosecutor's office for legal action, Libération points out.
