The case was conducted with the utmost secrecy. According to our information, Th. A. Tall, son of the general caliph of the Omar family, was arrested last Saturday at the Senegalese-Gambian border as part of an investigation into a gold transaction estimated at more than 95 million CFA francs.
Taken to the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC), he was placed in police custody following a complaint filed by businessman Mr. Sarr, who accuses him of fraud in a gold sale.
At the end of the preliminary investigation, Th. A. Tall was brought before the financial prosecutor's office. The case was then assigned to the judge of the 3rd investigating chamber. The investigating magistrate charged him with criminal conspiracy and fraud, before placing him under judicial supervision, considering that the case presented "serious challenges."
Faced with the accusations, the accused denied any involvement. He claims to have been merely a mediator between the seller, L. Diallo, and the buyer, Mr. Sarr, in a dispute over the authenticity of the precious metal. According to his explanations, he attempted to calm tensions at the hotel where the parties were staying, before tests were carried out on the gold. The buyer then allegedly shipped the metal to Dubai for expertise, but five days later, his business partner declared it a fake.
His lawyers, Mr. Borssou Pouye, Mr. Marème Datt, and Mr. Alioune Badara Ndiaye, have requested his provisional release. They cite the existence of "serious disputes" over the imputability of the alleged facts, believing that the civil party should have produced a counter-expertise to confirm the falsity of the gold, as well as evidence establishing the existence of associates in the operation.
