Avocats sénégalais «écartés» au profit d’un cabinet français : Juan Branco révèle
Juan Branco revealed this Thursday a new case in which the Senegalese government allegedly "sidelined" Senegalese lawyers in favor of a French firm. This case is reportedly the one between Woodside Energy and the Senegalese government before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.
"The Senegalese government has appointed the French law firm Gide to defend its interests in a recently opened arbitration," reveals the Franco-Spanish lawyer who was in Ousmane Sonko's pool of counsel during his political and legal troubles.
For him, there is a lack of rupture in the ties with the firms that represented the interests of the previous regime and serve the system. "My colleagues are systematically excluded from litigation by the administration, which has not actually changed hands. Yet they are the ones who carried out the revolution," he says.
For Juan Branco, it is worth considering his colleagues who risked their lives at a time when some people occupying the highest positions of the State were hiding.
"They were the only ones, along with Ousmane Sonko, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and thousands of anonymous people, to risk their lives. I still remember high-ranking figures who stopped taking our calls, for fear of repression, while they continued to, right up to the Constitutional Council, speak out loud and clear about a message that would otherwise have disappeared," he said.
Today, the Franco-Spanish lawyer speaks of a lack of respect towards his Senegalese colleagues: "I am overwhelmed to see and hear them tell me about the contempt and lack of respect they face daily. I send them my most lively and admiring thoughts, because they have taught a rare lesson to the world and paved the way for their inclusion in a History from which no one will be able to exclude them," he says.
