A few weeks ago, Guy Marius Sagna questioned the current government on the new developments in the case of Juan Branco's arrest in Dakar in August 2023. The MP had sent a written question to the Minister of Justice on July 21.
In the correspondence, he asked him, in short, if it is "true that for a year the Spanish justice system has been asking the Senegalese authorities to transmit to them the information they have relating to the kidnapping of the lawyer Juan Branco in Mauritania and his incarceration in Dakar?"
"Is it true that despite several reminders, no information has been made available to the Spanish justice system?" the MP insisted in his written question sent to the Minister of Justice. Juan Branco, for his part, took the ball on the rebound. In a Tribune posted on his digital platforms, he briefly recalled this tumultuous episode.
"I was kidnapped in Mauritania by the regime's secret services, taken to Nouakchott, and after two days of arbitrary detention in several secret locations, hooded, handcuffed by plainclothes agents and transported to Senegal via the Rosso River, from where a convoy of heavily armed soldiers, without identification, took me from wasteland to wasteland, before handing me over to other para-state forces, and finally handing me over to Saint-Louis, to the Bic, to have me imprisoned," Branco narrates.
And he continued: "They wanted to make me face life imprisonment. Because I had defended a man." The Franco-Spanish lawyer then congratulated the author of the written question: "There are people who do wonders and whose ability to stay the course, whatever the cost, commands admiration. This is the case, in Senegal, of the revolutionary Guy Marius Sagna. He is an example and a Pantheon," he said.
But, while Juan Branco was enthusiastic about the MP and his initiative, he was not very kind to the government, which remained silent on Guy Marius Sagna's written question.
"No response was given to his request by the government of the one for whom I crossed the ocean for two days in a canoe, after having spent four days on Senegalese territory, to defy the power that wanted it devastated, and to remind it, while everyone was hiding, that it would never be abandoned," he posted on the wall of the Facebook page. The Senegalese authorities will appreciate it.
