Direct-Info : Cheikh Amar traîné en justice
Former employees of the daily newspaper Direct-Info, members of the Synpics union, have announced their intention to take legal action again to obtain payment of their back wages, which have been withheld since 2019. Despite a court ruling in their favor, the former workers denounce the delaying tactics of the owner, Cheikh Amar, who is accused of refusing to allow a bailiff to serve the appeal judgment. This stance is hindering the enforcement of the decision and preventing the recovery of the funds.
In their statement, seen by Wal Fadjri, the plaintiffs point out that the crisis dates back to the dismissal of the former managing director, Pape Diogoye Faye. At the time, Cheikh Amar pledged to take control of the situation and settle the debt owed to the staff. However, since 2021, the businessman has reportedly been unreachable and has refused to meet with the union representatives.
The workers also emphasized that they had suspended their union activities out of simple decency, following Cheikh Amar's car accident on the Ila Touba highway. They deplored the fact that, in return, the employer publicly displayed its flourishing financial health, while the newspaper had never been officially liquidated.
Even more serious, they insist, is the alarming social situation of the former employees: several have been evicted from their homes, while others are unable to access basic medical care. The case of two employees, unfairly dismissed in 2015, is particularly telling: they are still waiting for their severance pay, despite a firm court ruling that has had no effect.
