«Je n'ai jamais...» : ce que Modou Fall a dit aux enquêteurs
Sen TV commentator Modou Fall has been remanded in custody for spreading false news. His trial is scheduled for next Monday. Before investigators from the Dakar Research Brigade (BR), he addressed his controversial statements regarding the death of student Abdoulaye Ba at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), while attempting to downplay their significance.
During his hearing, the contents of which were reported by Libération, he denied having directly accused the government of paying students to incriminate opposition figures such as Bougane Guèye Dany, Barthélemy Dias, and Thierno Alassane Sall. According to him, it was not a formal accusation, but simply a warning: "I never claimed that the state or members of the presidential movement had given money to students. I simply raised the alarm," he stated, as quoted by the newspaper.
When questioned about the identity of the alleged financiers, Modou Fall indicated that he had not targeted anyone in particular, suggesting the possibility of "malicious individuals." However, pressed by the gendarmes to specify the source of his claims, the columnist eventually admitted the lack of tangible evidence: he acknowledged that it was, in reality, simply a rumor.
Modou Fall was keen to explain that he was primarily seeking to prevent any attempt to manipulate the university crisis which, in his view, could have led to unduly blaming the opposition for the tragedy.
