Justice : 849 personnes sous bracelet électronique, au Sénégal
Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals Ousmane Diagne revealed to MPs that 849 people are currently wearing electronic monitoring devices in Senegal. This clarification aims to correct some perceptions that only political leaders or former dignitaries involved in legal cases would benefit from this measure.
"Contrary to popular belief, authorities or former authorities who have had a run-in with the law are not the only beneficiaries," the minister said.
According to him, although these cases receive more media coverage, many Senegalese people convicted of minor offenses also benefit from this alternative to incarceration.
Ousmane Diagne reiterated that wearing an electronic bracelet remains a form of judicial sanction and not a privilege. "Many Senegalese with minor offenses benefit from this favor, which is also, it must be said, a form of judicial sanction," he explained.
This clarification comes as several parliamentarians have expressed reservations about the application of the measure. Some believe that those who have "stolen billions" should not benefit from it, while petty criminals continue to languish in prison.
