Mbour : Une mère implore le tribunal de maintenir son fils en prison pour violences familiales
The court in Mbour was the scene of an unusual confrontation during the hearing between A. Diop, in his forties, and his mother. A fisherman by trade, he is accused of repeated violence against his mother. Y. Sarr describes her son as a constant source of terror within the household.
"Every time he drinks, he wreaks havoc at home. I do everything for him, but he never fails to abuse and threaten us," the visibly distressed mother told the court in Mbour.
In a heartfelt account, Y. Sarr begged the judge to keep her son in custody. "Keep him until the end of the month," she insisted, fearing a new cycle of violence if he were released.
When questioned by the judge about a possible claim for damages, the mother responded bluntly: "Even if he has to pay me damages, he won't have the means. I'm the one who provides for his needs. I'm just asking you to keep him in prison until the end of the month," insists Y. Sarr.
Faced with these statements, A. Diop, with a threatening face, said in Wolof to his mother: "Yaye boye, est-ce que yangui comprendre li ngay wakh?" (Mother, do you understand the meaning of your words?).
Undeterred, Y. Sarr maintained his position: "If you let him out, he'll give us even more trouble. I'm sick, just like the other members of the family. We don't have the strength to face him."
The public prosecutor has requested that the law be applied. The verdict is expected on January 8th.
