Me Said Larifou : « Ce recours n’a absolument rien à voir avec l’éligibilité de M. Ousmane Sonko »
Said Larifou, a Comorian lawyer representing Ousmane Sonko, was keen to clarify the purpose of the appeal for review filed by the defense. "This appeal has absolutely nothing to do with Mr. Ousmane Sonko's eligibility. His eligibility is fully and definitively established." He reiterated that the current Prime Minister is registered to vote and that he led a list in the last legislative elections, which was validated by the voters.
The legal proceedings, he insists, are solely aimed at redressing an injustice. For the lawyer, the heart of the struggle lies elsewhere. "It's about restoring the rights that have been violated, about restoring a truth that should never have been suppressed." According to him, Sonko's conviction stems from a gross miscarriage of justice, which has caused multiple political, democratic, and institutional damages. "There has been a democratic anomaly. Our client's dignity must be fully restored."
Amnesty is not innocence
The Comorian lawyer also emphasized the need to clearly distinguish between "two concepts often confused in public debate." He explained that "amnesty is a legal erasure, motivated by a desire for political appeasement. But amnesty is not innocence." It is precisely for this reason, he argued, that the appeal for review is legitimate and necessary: it is a pursuit of truth and justice, not a political compromise.
A right open to all citizens
Dismissing accusations of preferential treatment, the lawyer points out that the procedure initiated is provided for by Senegalese law: “Any citizen who believes they have been wrongfully convicted and who possesses new evidence can request a review of a final decision. This applies to Mr. Sonko as it does to any other Senegalese citizen.” He insists, “He is not asking for a favor. He is asking for the law to be applied.” Beyond the Sonko case, the lawyer asserts a continental dimension. “We want this procedure to serve as an example for Africa. A citizen should not be prevented from exercising their political rights by legal technicalities or political manipulation.”
And he concluded with a fundamental demand: "We want justice free from political pressure. This would be a very valuable lesson for Africa. The harm has not only been done to Mr. Sonko, but also to his supporters, to the Senegalese people, to democracy, and even to Africa, which had high hopes."
