Supporters sénégalais détenus au Maroc : le wolof interdit, leur avocat alerte
As reported by Libération, Me Patrick Kabou, the lawyer for the 18 Senegalese supporters detained in Rabat, denounces new restrictions which he considers to be an attack on the fundamental rights of his clients.
One of the grievances concerns telephone communications with loved ones. The lawyer reveals that Moroccan authorities now require detainees to speak exclusively in French during family calls. This measure poses a major obstacle, as the majority of supporters and their families do not speak French, their primary language being Wolof.
As a result, Me Kabou points out, this language barrier creates total misunderstanding and deprives detainees of the opportunity to describe their actual conditions of detention to their families.
Beyond this isolation, Mr. Kabou laments a series of judicial malfunctions that are seriously hindering the work of the defense. The lawyer states that he has still not been able to consult the case file or speak freely with his 18 clients. Even more serious, he indicates that he is regularly prevented from accessing the Rabat Court of First Instance, despite being the officially appointed lawyer in this case.
