Tambacounda : le coordonnateur de Taxawu Sénégal, Lassana Kanté, placé sous mandat de dépôt
The court has ruled. Lassana Kanté, coordinator of Taxawu Sénégal in Tambacounda, spent his first night in jail. After a meeting Wednesday with prosecutor Aliou Dia, the political leader was remanded in custody. He is being prosecuted for insulting an authority exercising all or part of the prerogatives of the head of state and for making statements contrary to public morals.
Despite the defendant's denials and his contestation of the charges against him, the prosecutor rejected the request for provisional release filed by his lawyer, Amadou Lady Ba. Lassana Kanté is now awaiting trial, scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, before the Tambacounda Criminal Court.
The legal proceedings against the politician are reportedly linked to comments recently made on social media and deemed offensive to the Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko.
Lassana Kanté was arrested on January 15th. As he was about to board a flight to Bamako from Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) to attend a funeral, he was apprehended by officers of the Air and Border Police Directorate (DPAF). Subject to a travel ban issued by the prosecutor of Tambacounda, he was handed over to investigators from the local gendarmerie's research section for further proceedings.
