Thiès : L’incroyable excuse d’un voleur de batterie devant le juge
Driver R. Bâ appeared before the Thiès court on Monday, March 16, 2026, charged with attempted theft committed at night. He is accused of attempting to steal the battery from Mr. Sy's vehicle.
In court, the defendant did not deny the facts. To justify himself, he offered a rather unusual explanation: he claimed that his own vehicle had broken down and that he was simply looking for a way to get going again.
"My vehicle was off and I had no one to help me push it to start the engine. That's how I came up with the idea of taking the battery from that vehicle to start my car," he told the judge.
The plaintiff, Mr. Sy, recounted the circumstances of the arrest. It was around 5 a.m., while he was going to the mosque, that he caught the defendant in the act.
According to the victim, the accused was not a first-time offender: "When he sensed my presence, he fled in his vehicle. We pursued him to arrest him. He is a professional in his field. He opened the hood of my vehicle in a very skillful way," he testified.
The public prosecutor, considering that the facts of attempted nighttime theft were perfectly established, requested a sentence of three months imprisonment.
The judge followed the prosecution's recommendations. After deliberation, R. Bâ was found guilty and sentenced to three months in prison.
