La presse s'unit en Front (FDLP) pour défendre libertés et dignité
Originally scheduled for November 1st, the Front for the Defense of Press Freedom (FDLP) was officially launched this Thursday, November 6th, 2025, at the Babacar Touré Press House. Supported by the main professional organizations, this initiative aims to defend freedom of expression, protect journalists, and consolidate a free and responsible media environment in Senegal.
During the ceremony, Mamadou Wane, Administrator of the newspaper Enquête, emphasized the need for unity and solidarity beyond differences. "We have different journalists' associations, press groups, and media outlets. But we must all work towards convergence and, in the best possible way, towards the strict defense of our freedoms; this is fundamental."
Mr. Wane emphasized the importance of building consensus around fundamental principles that guarantee access to fair and verified information. He also announced that the FDLP will be open to civil society and human rights organizations.
Ibrahima Lissa Faye, president of the Association of Online Publishers and Press Professionals (APPEL), reminded the new generation of its duty to continue the fight of its elders. "Our predecessors fought to preserve freedom of expression, the honor and dignity of journalists and technicians. We have no right to fail," he declared.
He called on media professionals to fight for the greater good of the profession, citing unity as the key to success, particularly in securing a collective bargaining agreement. Mr. Faye warned against the materialistic tendencies that weaken journalism's fighting spirit and rejected "capitulationist rhetoric" in the face of the sector's hardships.
Addressing the issue of the breakdown of trust, Ibrahima Lissa Faye insisted that those who raise the issue cannot substantiate it. "It is media content that serves TikTokers, influencers, and activists alike. If we don't produce content, these people will have nothing to share," he emphasized, reaffirming the central role of professional media.
Alassane Samba Diop, director of the E-media Invest group, recalled the attacks by political powers that the media landscape has long suffered. He lamented the current state of the press, believing that pioneers like Babacar Touré would not be proud.
He emphasized the responsibility to reverse this perspective in order to bequeath decent working conditions to future generations. For him, faced with powers that seek to silence dissenting voices, the solution lies in producing quality content to supplant influencers.
In conclusion, Mr. Diop identified the real economic battle. He urged the government to fight at the regional level to ensure that the GAFAM companies pay the fair price they owe to the African press.
He revealed that estimates in Senegal range between 50 and 80 billion CFA francs. "Our governments should support the Senegalese local press while remaining professional," he concluded.
