RTS : Des travailleurs exigent le départ de Pape Alé Niang et un audit urgent
The social climate at the Senegalese Radio and Television Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) has reached a point of no return. This Wednesday, January 28, 2026, the SYNPICS and SYNPAP unions mobilized a large number of employees for a general assembly followed by a demonstration in front of the company's premises.
Amid whistles and placards, the workers denounced what they considered an authoritarian and opaque management style by the Director General, Pape Alé Niang.
Press access denied: union anger
The coordinator of SYNPAP, Mama Moussa Niang, condemned the ban on private media accessing the premises to cover the event. Acting on instructions from management, security forces blocked journalists' entry, an act denounced by protesters as a "serious attack on freedom of expression."
Disputes over company agreements
The main point of contention remains the unilateral suspension of the company agreement signed two years ago. This agreement, which benefits nearly 800 employees, has been stalled since the arrival of the new CEO. For the union representatives, this decision amounts to "financial strangulation."
“This agreement allowed us to take out bank loans. Today, the banks are still taking payments even though our income has dwindled. We’re not living anymore, we’re just surviving,” laments Mama Moussa Niang. Youssouf Kaba, general secretary of SYNPICS-RTS, echoes this sentiment, calling it a “matter of survival” for more than 300 employees on the brink of collapse.
Suspicions of nepotism and financial shady dealings
The protests have taken a more serious turn with revelations about contract management. Workers are openly accusing Pape Alé Niang of nepotism, claiming that the contract for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations fan zones was awarded to his own brother, Thierno Niang. They also allege suspicious fund transfers benefiting Thierno, who is not even employed by RTS. Faced with these suspicions, the inter-union group is now demanding an independent audit and a thorough review of the current management.
On the infrastructure front, the unease is just as profound. The protesters denounce a striking contrast: "The Director General has two luxurious offices at RTS 1 and RTS 2, while other department directors are practically without fixed offices," complains one employee.
The demand for dismissal
Believing dialogue has broken down, the workers are now turning to the highest authorities of the state. Their demand is clear: the outright dismissal of Pape Alé Niang. "We refuse to work under the dictatorship of a director who despises his staff," warn the unions, who threaten to escalate their actions if their demands are not met immediately.
